Mahela Group (PTY) Ltd was started by the late BJ Vorster in 1942 who originally cultivated potatoes, tomatoes and rice, with the first litchi’s planted in 1947. His first cultivation of citrus began in 1950 and presently the farm is run by the third generation of Vorsters.


Production consist mainly of citrus but also bananas, avocados, macadamia nuts, litchis and mangoes. Packing of the citrus is done at The Junction pack house with approximately 2.1 million cartons per annum packed for export. The export of all Mahela’s citrus and subtropical fruit is done according to Global Gap international accreditation standards.


Mahela Boerdery is one of only two citrus nurseries in Limpopo having accredited citrus nursery status, the Letsitele Nursery, which adheres to the strict requirements of the South African Citrus Improvement Scheme.


Mahela Group are involved in a game breeding project which started in 1998, featuring the rare sable antelope. Included in the gene pool is the highly sought-after Western Zambian Sable.
